Life in A Glass House: Lautner’s Schaffer residence

The Schaffer residence in Los angeles is one of many famous houses by architect John Lautner, since it featured in Tom Ford’s film debut A Single Man in 2009, in which it is the home of George Falconer (played by Colin Firth). The Schaffer House in Glendale, California, was built in 1949, and was the first house Lautner designed after leaving Frank Lloyd Wright.

With its strong horizontal lines and open character, it is iconic for the Mid-century Modern movement that was influenced by Lautner’s mentor, Frank Lloyd Wright. Although the house is not as glamorous as his later projects, the design of the small two-bedroom house is clearly distinguishable by Lautner’s warm modernism.
